On the Water, My Disability is No Longer Disabling

8/8/2012 12:00:00 AM

The CT Adaptive Rowing Program (CARP) is well into the 7th season of offering individuals with a physical disability or visual impairment an opportunity to engage in the sport of rowing. The 2012 rowing season, which started in May provided orientation sessions to more than 40 individuals interested in learning to row or volunteering with the program. All rowing slots for Session I were filled, every shell, every seat, every piece of adaptive equipment was utilized to promote independence on the water. New and returning rowers alike appeared to enjoy being on the scenic CT River more than ever this season- great weather certainly helps.

While the recreational rowing component provides many benefits, competitive rowing opportunities show continued growth. Plans are currently in place for CARP Members to train 2-3 times a week, while gearing up for the Head of the Riverfront Regatta in September. The commitment of the NSCIA,CC and Riverfront Recapture, Inc are essential for Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital to continue to offer this unique opportunity that is proven to enhance Quality of Life.
